Joe, maybe the Royals are terrible, but the one run thing is killing them as much as the Reds. They are 2-4 in Xtra innings and 4-12 in one run games. Pythag says they should be in third, just a game behind the WhiteSox (whereas the Tigers should be well behind at minus 1.7 Run Differential a game). Royals have a bad bullpen (and one that is terribly inconsistent, with the pitcher who pitched good last time getting bombed this time), but their lineup isn’t half bad (middle of the pack in the AL).
June 3 is also the 10th anniversary of Randy Johnson’s first attempt at 300 wins. The game was supposed to have been held at Nationals Park, but it started raining around 5:00, and never let up, leading to the game being canceled and rescheduled as a traditional double-header on June 4. The Big Unit ended up getting the win on the 4th, which meant that his 300th win fell on the 10th anniversary of his 150th career win, and the 20th anniversary of his 5th career win.
Which means that yes, tomorrow will be the 10th anniversary of the last time a pitcher reached the 300-win milestone.
