  1. Thanks. Sad to see him go, but I am in the same boat. Loved him in the 80’s, lost track a bit since. I’m more of a Raspberry Beret and Let’s Go Crazy guy, though.

    We went to see him in concert a few years ago. Just too many people raving about his live shows, so we went on a whim, not having heard much of his last 20 years output. We had seats a long way off, but he owned the United Center.

  2. Prince never meant a thing to me. He had a handful of songs I liked, dozens more that I hated, hundreds I could take or leave.

    I remember almost nothing about his Super Bowl show, which shows how much his work resonated with me. But I don’t tend to complain about mediocre halftime shows because I’m old enough to remember Super Bowl 5, where the entire halftime show was (as Dave Barry would say, I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP!) Anita Bryant singing an a capella version of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” If you’re like me, you grew up thinking there was just one verse and the “Glory, glory, Hallelujah” chorus, right? Wrong! There are numerous verses, and Anita sang them all.

    Strangely enough, the halftime show I liked most came in the middle of the worst Super Bowl ever under the worst conditions imaginable, and was put on by an artist I’m not a huge fan of. A little over two years ago, at snowy Giants Stadium, Bruno Mars actually made me forget the Broncos’ inept play of the first half.With his energy, He ALMOST made a horrible Super Bowl worth tuning in for, singlehandedly.

  3. Our generation’s Mozart. Music just poured out of him. Jazz, Rock, R&B, Funk. These are names of great rivers. We stand on the shore and listen as musicians who’ve mastered the current float past. The great ones become their own and carry us away. His passing is the end of something wonderful. Just empty. A musical genius. Thank you Prince. You made us feel wonderful.

    Prince’s halftime show blew them all away. I hadn’t heard the press conference story – that’s awesome! And I think I might steal that idea of a “halftime show” at a concert where there’s a small football game in the middle of the set, ha!

  6. Two further notes about that Super Bowl set: In addition to his own songs, Prince also did an almost-random cover of the Foo Fighters’ then-current hit, “The Best of You”, and absolutely shredded on the guitar doing it. Perhaps this was some sort of a reproof to Dave Grohl, as some have speculated…for what I wouldn’t know. But it left the original in the dust.

    And just before going out, Prince was asked if the rain was going to be a problem. He replied, “Can you make it rain harder?”
